One of the coolest things the CrossFit community offers are the competitions, both locally and worldwide. I know we've spent a lot of time focusing on The Open, The Regionals, and now the upcoming Reebok CrossFit Games. We are all stoked to see the forthcoming battle ensue between the creme de la creme of CrossFitters! But for the majority of us who didn't make it to The Games we are lucky to have so many opportunities to compete on a local level. One of the best places to see what's going on throughout the CrossFit world is right here on SICFIT.com
Living in Orange County, I'll admit I'm pretty lucky because there is always something CrossFit oriented going on. We have several big competitions out here each year and a lot of friendly smaller competitions between local boxes. If you don't have anything like that in your area there are a couple options - get together with another affiliate and make it happen. Put together an old skool box battle OR option b - travel. Even with all of the CrossFit activity in The OC, we have members at our box who take road trips outside of our little bubble to go compete in other counties and states. They always come back with great stories to tell of how it all went down.
I love the local competition circuit because, after being in this community for several years, it is a time to catch up with familiar faces in your community, watch friends and family compete, and it gives you an idea of who your local firebreathers are. Also, many of the larger local competitions have all the big sponsor names we like to see so that we can make our protein, apparel, and equipment purchases. All in all they are a lot of fun and help strengthen our community.
With that said, I am still extremely pumped for The Games and SICnights because they take it to a whole new level. Not only do we get to watch and scream our heads off for our favorite affiliate teams and individual athletes from around the world, but we get to rub shoulders with them afterwards at SICnights. Nothing like drinking booze with a whole bunch of relatively strict paleo CrossFitters. Good times are to be had for sure!
Personally, I'm looking forward to wearing some high heels and dancing the night away with my CrossFitting friends instead of the usual gym clothes and WOD routine we experience together. You can get your tickets to The Games here and to SICnights here- I recommend doing so as it is cost effective and guarantees you a place at two of the biggest CrossFit events of the year. See you there! |

The SoCal Regional proved to be a fashionable occasion for both men and women as they strutted their CrossFit stuff to and from tent city. Favorite thing about all of the fashion was the color! This brings me to the brightest clothes I've seen provided by Rx Stars (which of course I had to have because in my world if it's not bright, it's not right!). Rx Stars isn't just apparel, it's a movement founded by Aly Willier. Rx-Stars is a goal setting workshop series that stands for learning to go Rx. It's about learning how to have the technique, strength, and determination to go Rx. Along with that, she has really cute gear...and sorry guys, it's for the ladies.![]() I would say her neon tank tops stood out the most among all the fashion trends happening at The Regionals. I'm glad I could get my hands on a tank and baseball tee because they were going fast! Her ball caps were really cute too!! You can find Aly on facebook - RX STAR or contact her at alywillier@gmail.com. |

In some areas, CrossFit boxes are few and far between, in others there are several to choose from located just blocks from each other. My question is, what makes your box stand out? Why did you join the box you did? I am interested in hearing what your box represents and why you chose to join there. Was it the owner, schedule, heavy metal, location, showers, community, and/or web presence that helped you decide on that gym? I believe that it's important for members to share why they love or hate their box because I know most affiliates are always looking for ways to improve and create the best experience possible. So tell us, why is your box awesome? By Kiki Dickson | SICFIT |

Congratulations to the Rogue Fitness - sponsored Rob Orlando, who made the Muscle & Fitness feature in the the July 2011 edition. It is both a testament to his athleticism & presence in the community. And you better believe that the community played a role. Remember this? The Rob Orlando Campaign video that "Rob O" submitted to SICFIT was viewed and embedded over 9,700 times.
This year's Regionals are in full swing and I am most definitely looking forward to the time we can enjoy the action in SoCal! In general, CrossFit preaches a pretty healthy life style but what happens when we scope out the elite athletes. Are they sticking to a clean lifestyle or are they adding "other" things into their nutrition regimen? And by other, I mean banned substances. This year, there has been drug testing at the Regional levels of competition. Awesome.
I don't know about you but this came as a pleasant surprise to me. I think drug testing is an important component to our sport. And additionally, as far as I've heard, no one has been busted. This is a testament to the integrity of our sport. I will say I have gotten wind of athletes who were suspected "users" that left the event before the testing could commence BUT if that is the case, then the testing can still be counted as a success because it removed someone who wasn't qualified to be there.
CrossFit adheres to the same guidelines as the NCAA. Yesterday, on Twitter, I brought up the topic of drug testing and I received interesting feedback. For example, CrossFit athlete Miguel Garza tweeted,
@kikidickson it will be interesting to see how it plays out for sure #drugtesting...if you haven't looked at list you could get screwed." and followed it with, "I mean if they're using #NCAA standards...people using #marijuana may get busted..."
I had never even thought about that before. I don't imagine there are many elite CrossFit athletes getting high but if they are, will the be dq'd? Frankly I don't care if they're smoking the ganja but I do care if they're a juice head. Sorry, Snooki but we're just not into that.
If you're a competing athlete, make sure you double check those labels on any of your pre and post WOD supplements because we all found out from last years Games, places like GNC sell products that have banned substances. Also if you think you can pull a fast one, take a hint from Andre Enriquez via Twitter,
@RubenRojas @kikidickson they tested pretty good at SouthEast. I was one of the people chosen. Kind of awkward cause the dude was staring haha". Glad to know they're watching!

Thus far we have established that we love our shirts and we love our shoes but how do we feel about CrossFit jewelry? Fashletics is a company paving that path. They offer fitness inspired jewelry that is designed and inspired by Sarah Wilson. Sarah has 10 years experience as a metalsmith and let's be honest, a female metalsmith just sounds badass. Not only does she have the experience to make the goods but she is also an experienced athlete, a damn good one. Check out the Fashletics website and it'll give you the low down on her athletic background both as a coach at South Florida CrossFit Endurance and as a Nationally ranked Duathlete Member of Team USA 2009, 2010.
Alright so back to the idea of CrossFit jewelry. I came across Fashletics for the first time when I emceed the Next Level Invitational back in December. In my bag of goodies there was a dog tag made by Fashletics but since dog tags are personally something I rock, I gave it to a friend who really liked it. What really caught my eye was something months later. My girl Tatiana and I were driving to grab some lunch at Bear Flag in Newport Beach (place is delish!), when I noticed her key chain - it was a kettlebell! I asked her where she got it and she replied, "It's from a company called Fashletics." She then went on to say how incredibly nice the woman was accommodating a concern she had. Unique products and awesome personalized customer service?! Sold!
I'm all for anyone bringing CrossFit into a new realm as it offers us another way to express who we are and what we love. I also like the fact that we can support small businesses in the US that represent our lifestyle. Visit Fashletics at and let me know what you think. You can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter @Fashletics.

We all know the CrossFit is growing and if you take a look at this graph, you can see it's growing at a consistent rate since 2005. The two graphs represent the following: Graph 1
24 Hour Fitness (Yellow)
P90x (Blue)
CrossFit(Red)
An up close look at the CrossFit data
Ronnie Teasdale, owner of CrossFit Mean streets, produced a similar graph back in 2009 and I was curious to see the growth from then.
While looking at the graph I couldn't help but chuckle as I noticed a spike in 24 hour searches every time the year crosses over and an even bigger jump for P90x. I also noticed that 2010/2011 marked CrossFit surpassing 24 hour fitness. And lastly, the most current data results for 2011 show P90x and CrossFit running pretty close in online searches.
This article may seem a little dry to some of you but I love that this graph actually tracks the growth of our sport. I can't wait to do this again next year and yes, I realize what a dork I sound like.

If you are highly amused by funny, sometimes vulgar, usually inappropriate comments with lots of foul language, do yourself a favor and check out forgingelitesarcasm.com or follow the jester on Twitter at @drywallcrossfit. I'll admit that it's not necessarily my everyday cup of tea but he definitely had me laughing.
For those of you who are having CrossFit woes, check out his Dear Drywall Mailbag where, "no question is too stupid, so send them over to drywallcrossfit@gmail.com." He will respond to your question or dilemma, but just remember that he is quite efficient at elite sarcasm.

You just finished your WOD, drank your recovery shake, and now have your phone in hand. What's the first thing you do - Facebook, Twitter, CrossFit.com, SICFIT.com, or beyond the white board? Social Media has been a huge help in this sport's growth. And to think it all started with what CrossFitter's call ".com".
The original means of online CrossFit communication was simple. You went to Crossfit.com to look at the WOD. Once you were finished, you posted your stats, time, and any thoughts to the comments section. There is a camaraderie which still goes on at .com, those trusty followers who banter back and forth just as if it was any other affiliate blog. I myself did this until I started over at CrossFit Los Angeles.
Now there are so many means of "CrossFit communication". I am guaranteed to see a slew of CrossFit topics rolling down my homepage every time I log into Facebook or Twitter. Then there is SICFIT which is 100% dedicated to ALL things CrossFit. I can find an abundance of daily videos, articles, and links to even more articles. And of course to make easy sharing possible, everything ties back to Facebook - the ULTIMATE social media hub. I can "like", "share", or "send as a message" almost anything and everything I find online these days. It's incredible. If I want my friends to know about my WOD, an article, or a SIC video I just watched, it's a matter of one click!
SICFIT, facebook, twitter, .com, and other social sites offer a central place to go and talk CrossFit. They are "places" we can debate ideas, workouts, photos, and videos. The online CrossFit community has really helped the sport become more close knit and widespread all at the same time. We can all share in the awesomeness of someone else's workout and talk about it with our friends.
What means of communication do you use for your online CrossFit communication?

I have talked about all of the many items we use as CrossFitters. Because there aren't any physical CrossFit stores, I think it is nice when a box offers various supplies to their members. I've been with gyms where my tape has run out and there isn't any for purchase. I realize that I should have been better prepared but it's still nice to have the option.
I am curious to know what kind of supplies your box carries. Do they have protein, fish oil, tape, shirts, jump ropes and in our case, snake oil? Anything unique to your gym? What does your box carry that has been helpful to you? And if it's not there, what would you like to see? |
