The Tease: CrossFit Games After Party

Something you may have heard about. We decided to throw a party. In celebration of the 2011 CrossFit Games, the athletes, and the hard working ladies and gents at HQ, we are hosting an unbelievable event along our friends at Life AsRX.  This is a private party and as such, there will only be 1,000 tickets available, internationally. The venue belongs to the CrossFit community, on this night. The tickets will go on sale, here on SICFIT, next Tuesday, May 31.

The venue? Los Angeles' famous Exchange L.A (17 minutes from Home Depot Center). The D.J.? The Platinum, Def Jam-signed DJ and producer DJ Felli Fel. The dress code? We call it, "One step below Rory." Gents, dress up but don't worry about a tie. Ladies can dress to impress, as well. Other than that, let us take care of it. Check back, daily, for more information. Be prepared for what will be one of the most SIC nights in CrossFit's history.

SICFIT is a proud supporter and media team for the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games. Come see us at the Home Depot Center.

CrossFit Brands: Gear Up

SICFIT's Tim Bougie photographs Crystal McReynolds

CrossFitters love their gear, right?!  Shoes and shirts!  And when it comes to shirts, we all have an abundance because we love to represent our underground fitness community. We love repping the CrossFit family's brands.  It makes it easy to identify who is in the know at the grocery store, the mall, or any other public spot.

If we're in a contest, shirt please.  If we attend Regionals or The Games, another shirt please.  And if we workout at another box, yep, definitely another shirt is necessary. Then of course, there are the shirt companies that sell fantastic CrossFit specific gear which we've just got to have for the sake of it.

Obviously my favorite apparel is all-things SICFIT because of what it stands for but another company that offers clever slogans and prints is Life AsRX. For one, they have numerous shirts referencing our love for bacon.  There is a puking unicorn, the popular WODKILLA t-shirt, and my new favorite is the one with the elliptical with the caption "FAIL" underneath".

I wonder what the future holds for CrossFit apparel companies.  Will they become the "TAPOUT" (UFC) or "Hurley" (board sports) of CrossFit? And will they grow outside of the sport? Will they be the ones sponsoring the athletes and holding tours?  I hope so because it is always nice to have a CrossFit-owned company as a title sponsor.

What do you think?  Will these grassroots apparel companies make it to the big leagues and if so, which ones?  Who are you ordering from?

From The Emcee's Perspective | By Kiki Dickson

After emceeing the Next Level Invitational last weekend I realized the need for shirts that represent both the CrossFit affiliate and the athlete doing all the work.  The emcee is given a list of names categorized by the athlete's registration number.  The list also includes their affiliate but most athletes tend to wear their affiliate shirt during competition so that it is an easy call for the emcee.  The problem arises as the athletes complete their first and second WODs, their athlete numbers gets rubbed off.

If your affiliate has a competition team it would be a great idea to get your first, last, or nickname printed on the shirt as well.  That way when you number rubs off, no worries because you're covered and you'll get your shout outs!  I'll be honest, my favorite affiliate shirts are the ones that are legible.  I found that I couldn't even read some of the shirts because the graphics overpowered the name.

If you like being the "unknown soldier" that works too.  This is just an idea for those of you who like to get a shout out during the WOD cause I know I like to give them! Great work to all of those who participated in the NLI! Good times.

One WOD at A Time | By Kiki Dickson

I recently received the story below from Andrew Walker:

"I was 19 and had reached an overwhelming weight of 291 pounds! The freshman 15 is common but mine was more of a freshman 36+. I new it was time for a change and that was the day I took my before picture. I made fitness a priority and started my diet. I eased my way into the Paleo Diet by cleaning up my food and slowly eliminating brown rice and bread.  Through my journey, I came across Crossfit 209 Sport where I met Gabe Subry and the beast was born. Football was my life and I was on the defensive side so a killer instinct had always been inside of me.

Now that football is over
CrossFit gives thrill of always chasing a goal. People ask me how long it took me to change my body and I don't really keep track because I am not done trying to become more fit and improve my cardio, strength, gymnastics, and so on.  I recently passed my Level 1 CrossFit certification and look to show everybody out there that it is NEVER TOO LATE! When it comes to CrossFit am I addicted? Maybe. Am I committed? DEFINITELY!"

When I finished reading the email, I found myself humbled by Andrew Walker's determination.  I was reminded how CrossFit is so many different things to so many different people across the world.  What starts with one WOD can turn into a whole new lifestyle.  I definitely take it for granted that I am part of such an awesome program and a member of such a dedicated community.  I have had the opportunity to work with several "Andrews" and nothing gives me more pleasure than to see those who commit fiercely and make it happen.  Does everyone make it through to see the positive results, unfortunately not, but those that do stick it out are greatly rewarded!

This post is dedicated to CrossFitters everywhere who pushed through, even when the odds were stacked so high against you.  Although the journey may take a little longer, I'm sure Andrew would agree that it is well worth it.  You have shown us all what it means to be SICFIT!

Editor's Note: We had the opportunity to watch Andrew compete in the elite division at the NLI, this past weekend. It became clear that his goals have yet to be fully achieved. He is a great athlete who will continue to improve. This is a story for those who think that they have to succeed by simply changing their appearance. Andrew changed much more than that.

The Team: Introducing J. Elliot Schrock

SICFIT
has come a long way in a short time. When the brand began, we lacked the one thing that makes business: great, global, and sustainable. And I will get to that one thing at the end.

Leading up to our involvement in the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games, I felt it important to introduce each core member of the SICFIT entourage. We’re a team like no other. Of course, there are official elements like any other business but with our team, there is little hierarchy. What we’ve found with our style of collaboration, governance, and well...business is this: talent will emerge when talent isn’t defined.

There is no greater example of this than the core members of our team. I’m proud to introduce a series of introductions and I am even more proud to begin with J. Elliot Schrock. In essence, he is the  SICfilm guru. Hailing from Austin, Texas through McAllen, Texas and Los Angeles, California (for six whole years), he is “Hollywood material” and he doesn’t even know it yet. Or maybe he does, he’s just too humble to express it. His nickname is “The Monk”, he is our go-to-guy for real world wisdom. Our SICFIT productions and our CrossFit Games productions? All one guy. From concept to filming to post production, he is like a mercenary and we’d be much further behind without his exceptional talent.

The 28 year old Austin resident was there from the beginning. I remember sitting in a room with Jeremy Thiel in February 2010, after we decided to push SICFIT at a suicide pace. We left the meeting with one conclusion, “We’ll start when Elliot moves to Austin in a few weeks.” His talents and abilities have been that crucial. But it’s not just the talent that makes him a vital part of the team. It’s his careful demeanor and laser focus. You won’t find someone more humble: intellectually, professionally, or athletically. Wait until the guy decides to compete in our sport. But back to what makes SICFIT a company that will do continue to do great things, while dynamically evolving our role in a sport that continues to do the same. Each of us takes our roles very seriously.

Sometimes those roles are simply, “there is no one to do it so figure it out.” But one basic tenant remains. We have a vision for how great our sport can be. And we have a vision for how we will fit within it. You can’t have vision when the body has no eyes. And in many ways, J. Elliot Schrock is our "eyes". And our SICFIT productions are a glance at how he views the CrossFit sport’s great future - and our own. The missing ingredient was vision.

Shoes vs. Feet | By Kiki Dickson

Chucks, Vibrams, Inov-8s, Risto,
Nike Romaleos
and Do-Wins are a few of the shoes that are found within the CrossFit community.   We love our shoes, not only because they reflect who we are are but because they are functional and help us better perform certain tasks.  In a typical CrossFit gym bag, it is not uncommon to see two or three pairs of shoes such as: a weightlifting shoe and a low profile sneaker. Balance, stability, agility, speed, and explosive power can all be connected to those two feet.  The question is, what should we wear on them?

I'm assuming everyone visiting SICFIT knows why we use low profile and weightlifting shoes but just incase you're new to the scene, here is a crash course - it is an issue of stability.  This issue arises when lifting heavy weight.  You need to be firmly planted to the ground when driving through those heels.  If you wear padded athletic shoes while weightlifting, you literally sink into the shoes, reducing your ability to generate force and press up against the weight, as the tension is absorbed by the cushion.

Running also requires proper footwear.  You should not be hitting the ground with your heel first because that is your bodies breaking mechanism.  You should be running on the balls of your feet.  This method is known in the running and CrossFit community as Pose running.  This is achieved by using gravity as the primary force for movement instead of muscular energy.  Click here to read about the basic techniques of Pose Running published by the CrosFit Journal.  The article, “You Walk Wrong” is an excellent in depth source explaining how “it took 4 million years of evolution to perfect the human foot.   But we’re wrecking it with every step we take.”  For anyone who wears a low profile shoe and wants to know why they’re wearing it, read the article.

Back in my pre-CrossFit years, I wore the typical cushion-heeled athletic shoes.  Once I got involved with CrossFit, I switched it up to Chucks (an inexpensive shoe that has regularly been in my closet since Jr. High), then I got my hands on some Vibrams which always seemed to become a conversation piece with strangers, and now I’m loving my Inov-8's!  The important thing about the three shoes is they are all low profile.  I know each of us have different preferences when it comes to shoes but here are the reasons why I am currently stuck on Inov-8's.  I love the supportive, snug fit and the stability they offer from being a low profile kick.  Although I love Chuck Ts, I don't wear them as much as I did before because they just don't feel as supportive as my Inov8s.  Inov8s are also lightweight which is important during runs and exercises such as pull-ups and handstand pushups.  I know, for some, the shoe is a bit too narrow and although they wear it during the WOD, they kick it off as soon as it is over because it is just too tight.

Another reason why I am an Inov-8 fan is because of the color choices and yes, I realize this has nothing to do with their function and everything to do with style.  It simply offers the buyer a way to personalize their purchase.  At last Saturday's SoCal Sectional Finals for WoD 11.6, the most popular shoe I saw was the Inov8 F-Lite 230 in a variety of colors such as blue, red, green, and pink.  It let me know that Inov8 is definitely doing it right.  Lastly, I like that in the description for some of their shoes it mentions CrossFit, "The stable, low profile 2 arrow Shoc-Zone™ and lightweight upper makes the 230 perfect for CrossFit."  It's nice to know that our sport influences their shoe.

The other shoe that was being used for WOD 11.6 were various weightlifting shoes. The thrusters gave reason to strap on the weightlifting shoe but one had to take into account the weight it would add for the chest to bar pull-ups.  More men opted for weightlifting shoes during the WOD then the ladies.  For different workouts, we require different shoes and just because one shoe works for a particular athlete during a WOD, doesn't mean the person next to them will opt for the same shoe.  I like that we have options and can choose what shoe works best for each particular WOD.

What shoe did you use for WoD 11.6 and in general, what are your favorite shoes to use for CrossFit?
