Festivus Games

The first Festivus competition was held on April 30th. The concept was simple yet long overdue. A CrossFit competition designed for novice and intermediate CrossFitters only. No fire-breather types allowed.Since these people make up 95% of CrossFitters it made sense to have a competition designed for only them.

The idea is that there would be no scaling. No athlete whether 6 months in or brand new to CrossFit would need to scale any of the events. This competition was to be about capacity more than a high degree of skill. Everyone can row...just how fast? Everyone could deadlift...just how much?

So the first competition sold out pretty quickly and about 70 athletes from several states showed up to compete. Everyone left excited and motivated to compete again. So when we received a few emails from some athletes wondering when we would do another this past September we decided to go for it. This time around over 120 athletes from 7 states showed up to compete. Again everyone had fun and were itching for another Festivus competition. Again the emails started coming in and we decided to hold a winter competition and because we would'n™t have use of the outdoors we limited it to 100 athletes. In the first 2 hours of open registration we sold over 30 spots. The rest sold out in 2 days.

So that brings us to today and the creation of the first national version called the Festivus Games. Novice and intermediate athletes from across the country will compete in a 1 day event, all on the same day. We will crown individual champions from each participating box and a national champ as well.

You can count on a feat of strength for sure!

Event Details

What is the Mid-Atlantic Open?

The Mid-Atlantic Open started as the NoVa Open at Patriot CrossFit. The organizers didn't want to lose the great energy and atmosphere of the CrossFit Games Sectionals from the year before. They created an event where people from all over the DC area could get together and do the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games Open workouts together.

This year, the event is The Mid-Atlantic Open hosted at District CrossFit. We're hoping to make this event even better with more athletes, more spectators and more prizes. We're expecting athletes from all over the region. Whether this is your first competition or you're a seasoned pro; this is the place you'll want to be.

Why should I do the Mid-Atlantic Open instead of doing the WODs at my home affiliate?

Well first of all we have a SICK prize package for everyone that participates. You can click here to learn more about it.

Remember when you first started CrossFit in a group class? The excitement, maybe even a little bit of nervous energy? It changed the game for how you got fit. You couldn't go back to your old ways.

Ask anyone who has done a real CrossFit competition and they will tell you the same thing applies to competition. You simply can't recreate the kind of excitement a true competition garners. Competing in an open competition will take your performance and your training to a new level. You'll be focused and fierce.

No matter if you're a games veteran or still in your first month of CrossFit; this competition will bring out the best in you.

Who can participate?

Absolutely anyone and everyone. If you If you're even considering trying The Open; you'll want to compete here. Men, women, masters, adults. Everyone is welcome.

How much does it cost?

Registration will open on January 15th. You'll have the option of signing up for 1, 2, 3, 4, or all 5 WODs. We'll be taking care of registering you with the CrossFit Games site so there will be a $10 surcharge (and you won't have to pay the CrossFit Games fee). If you plan on competing please don't register on the Games site as we will not refund your $10.

If you sign up before February 14th each WOD will cost $10 (plus the one-time $10 CrossFit Games Registration Fee). If you sign up for all 5 it will be $45 (plus the one-time $10 CrossFit Games Registration Fee = $55). After February 14th each WOD will cost $20. If you sign up for all 5 it will be $60 (plus the $10 CrossFit Games Registration Fee = $70).

When is the Open?

The Open will be every Saturday during the Reebok CrossFit Games Open Season. In other words, Saturday February 25th, March 3rd, March 10th, March 17th, and March 25th. We'll be starting the first heat at 9am and depending on how many athletes are participating we'll fit everyone in until the last heat of the day.

Where is the Open?

The Mid Atlantic Open will be hosted by District CrossFit in 2012. Here's the address. We'll have free parking available for each day for all athletes (feel free to car pool).

We're also incredibly accessible via metro. Here are directions from Chinatown/Gallery Place, Convention Center and Metro Center.

What if I have another questions?

Kokoro 21 will track the adventures of class 21 as it undergoes its own version of hell on February 24th through the 26th, 2012. Whether you are an aspiring Kokoro trainee, a graduate, or just very interested in what motivates and drives these peeps to undergo such an event, you will not want to miss this once in a lifetime digital experience.

About Kokoro:

There comes a time in everyones life when they are ready for a test - a test of their heart and soul. A real test that takes you to your very core - your soul - and either spits you out or makes you into a new person.

SEALFIT Kokoro Camp is such a test. As the world's premier training camp for forging mental toughness and the warrior spirit, the camp is an intense crucible experience based off of the famous Navy SEAL Hell Week training.

In 2010 SEALFIT's Kokoro Camp broke onto the CrossFit stage with their CrossFit Journal video series of top Games competitors and CrossFit fire breathers navigating the rocky terrain of Kokoro.

Kristen Clever, Miko Salo, Tommy Hackenbruck, Rob Orlando, Greg Amundson joined 20 other special ops candidates and CrossFit athletes to challenge the 50 hour crucible adventure. The training was epic and the footage of the trials and tribulations, victories and crushing failures of the trainees, alongside the amazing leadership and teamwork displayed by a rare group of individuals, inspired thousands who watched each episode like a reality show.

Now SICFIT is proud to partner with SEALFIT to offer the next episode...

*Workout 1: *

Power Snatches + Rowing

There is a 12 minute running clock. On the Odd minutes, you must perform 4 power snatches AS HEAVY AS POSSIBLE.

On the Even minutes, you will perform a Max Distance Row.

*Standards:*

For the movement to be considered a power snatch, the bar must move in one motion from the ground to overhead. Press-outs will be permitted, but the the initial catch must be made OVER THE HEAD. The bar must continue to go up from the initial catch, if the bar moves down at any point in time, that will result in a "No Rep."

*Rules:*

1.) You must provide your load for the power snatch at registration. Load cannot be changed after registration. BE PREPARED UPON ENTRY OF THE FACILITY TO PROVIDE YOUR POWER SNATCH LOAD.

2.) You will not be penalized for not completing all 4 snatches, but you cannot complete more than 4.

3.) There is no transition time between the snatches and the rowing.

*Scoring:*

Your score from this workout will come from your Total Pounds Lifted PLUS your Distance Rowed.

For example: Athlete X used 100# and completed all 24 lifts, their score for the snatch portion would be 2400lbs. Athlete X also completed 2100m on the rower. Their OVERALL score for Workout 1 would be 4500 points (2400lbs lifted + 2100m Rowed).

*Masters will perform this exact workout.
The 2012 Life AsRx Winter Open presented by SicFit is adding:

The All CrossFitters Partner Workout
"THE DUET"
Now that we will be in The World's Largest CrossFit Gym, Captain CrossFit in Prescott Arizona, for The 2012 Winter Open we are able to add an All-CrossFitters-Partner Throwdown!! This workout, called "The Duet" will be do-able by anyone who knows the CrossFit movements. The beauty of "The Duet" is that it can challenge the most awesome of you and be an appropriate fun workout for those of you still new to CrossFit. There are no movements that will trip you up. No "I-can't-do-those-yet" movements. No pullups. No handstand pushups. But we aren't dumbing it down either. We aren't talking about a 20min AMRAP of 400m runs, I promise! You need a partner, but you can be at quite different CrossFitting abilities. There will be 4 divisions:

"The Brothers Duet" - Two Men
"The Sisters Duet" - Two Women
"Duet Mix" - One Man, One Woman
"Duet for Kids" - Two Kids
"There is a mistake in the narration of the video with regard to the weight for the Master's Women. In the narration Freddy says the Master's Women's weight is 95lbs, but it is, in fact, 85lbs. I repeat, "The Master's women's weight for the Bear Complex in WOD #1 is 85lbs."

WORKOUT #1:

*Complete three rounds for time of:*

- *Three cycles of the bear complex (M:155#/W:105#/MM:135#/MW:85#)*
- *15 chin over the bar pull-ups*

*Bear Complex Movement Standards:*

1 "cycle" of the bear complex- barbell starts on the ground, perform a power clean, then a front squat, then bring the barbell from your shoulders to fully locked out over your head, lower the bar to behind the neck, then perform a back squat, and lastly take the barbell from behind your neck to fully locked out over head. When you pass through the front squat and the back squat, your hip crease must be below the crease of your knee - you must break parallel. For the shoulder to overhead movement, your arms need to be fully locked out at the top and we need to be able to see your ears in front of your arms. You may complete a squat clean/thruster/back squat/rack thruster as long as the hip is below parallel on every squat and the arms are locked out overhead. You may only dump the barbell when you have completed an ENTIRE cycle. If you dump the bar early, you must start the cycle over from the power clean.

Refer to
video: http://vimeo.com/33996831

*Pullup Movement Standards:* There will be no butterfly pull-ups allowed. You can do them strict, or you may use a kip. In order for your pull-up to count, you must be hanging with your arms fully extended and then have your chin over and in front of the bar at the top.

Refer to video:
http://vimeo.com/34001719

*WORKOUT #2*

*Complete the following for time:*

- *5 handstand push-ups*
- *10 bar facing burpees*
- *10 handstand push-ups*
- *20 bar facing burpees*
- *15 handstand push-ups*
- *30 bar facing burpees*

*Handstand Pushup: *

RX'D Men: Men will perform the HSPU on plates that are 2-3 inches in height. The distance between the plates is 12 inches. The plates will be against the wall. Hand placement on the plates can be anywhere as long as some portion of the hand in in contact with the center hole of the plate. You must start with your arms fully locked out and both of your feet on the wall, then you must have the top of your head touch the ground between the plates before you push back up. At the top of your handstand pushup, you need to have both of your feet touching the wall and your arms fully locked out in order for your rep to count. If a foot comes off the wall before lockout, the rep is no good. You may kip if you choose, but the same standards still apply.

RX'D Women: Hands no more than 30 inches apart. No bumper plates. Same standards
apply

RX'D Masters Men: Same as RX'D Women.

RX'D Masters Women: Same standards, but you are allowed to use one Abmat
placed on the floor under your head. The Abmat is pushed up against the
wall with the thicker part closer to the wall.

Refer to video: http://vimeo.com/34003196

*Bar Facing Burpee:*

You will need to have a bar with a standard set of bumper plates on it. Burpee standards are chest touches the deck. When you jump over the bar, you must be facing the bar, and two feet must leave the ground at the same time. Two feet must land on the ground at the same time on the other side of the bar. Athlete must completely face the bar before performing the next rep.
GOING INTO DAY 2:
EVERYONE COMPETES TOMORROW. NO CUTS. Everyone will compete in WOD 4 tomorrow morning. First heat starts at 8:30am. SAME HEATS AS TODAY. No changes to heats. Too many DNFs in the advanced mens "Zach" WOD to make it fair to do any cuts. SEE YOU ALL AT 8am for the meeting.

The Home of the O.C. Throwdown:

The Hangar at the OC Fair & Event Center is the centerpiece of the 150 acre campus. Opened in April of 2010, the 23,000 square foot was designed with an aviation hangar look, including a 50 foot high ceiling as well as 50 foot high hangar doors that can be rolled back to give The Hangar an indoor/outdoor feel.

The building offers complete mens and womens restrooms. A dedicated athlete room with massage tables and lounge chairs. Rooms dedicated for scoring, media, volunteers/judges, and a ticket office.

The opening ceremonies will kick off at 8am on Saturday with the national anthem and the revealing of WOD #1 projected on to the big screen. 8:30am is the start of the first heat.

Food is very good. We worked closely with the caterers to deliver food for CrossFitters. Tri tip, roasted chicken, beef brisket, ribs, grilled veggies, and fresh fruit. Of course their will be un paleo options as well as several draft beers and cocktails.

The Hangar is a five minute drive from OC's John Wayne Airport. Their will be plenty of parking and a tent city for affiliates to place their tents. Smack dab in the middle of tent city the floater workout will take place on Saturday with its own DJ and bleachers. Tickets for the 2012 OC Throwdown can be bought at the door, or save yourself a wait in line and purchase them here. Kids 12 and under are free.

Congrats to ALL the competitors. It was a super fun last three weeks. I hope you guys had a good time with it all. We still need volunteers and judges. Judges will need to pass a strict standards test and will be well PAID this year. More details on that in the next couple of days. But just so stoked for everyone that participated. Those WODs were TOUGH and we saw some incredible performances. In two months we gained 750 followers of our facebook page and averaged nearly 4,000 hits a day on our website in the past few weeks. Thats pretty epic. In return we promise to bring you the finest competition outside of the Games. We are stoked and will see you all in just 8 weeks.
______________

WOD 3 RELEASED

5 RFT (Rounds For Time)
8 Bar facing burpees
8 Deadlifts (225/155)
8 Toes 2 Bar

No one is guaranteed entry. You must qualify. Top 75 qualifiers go elite. Next top qualifiers go intermediate. Don't cry about it, be about it. That's our perspective, at least.
Saturday December 3rd, 2011 CrossFit Flagstaff Presents:

The first WOD of the day is called Lauriel(this is the only workout the competitors will know ahead of time). During her treatments after surgery, in her blog, Lauriel talks about the regimen of 5 days chemo, 23 days no chemo...I met with the neuro-oncologist who explained what would happen over the next year. During radiation, I would take oral chemotherapy drugs every day, for 6 weeks, even on days I did not receive radiation. After radiation concluded, I would take a 23 day break, and then start a regimen of 5 days of chemo, 23 days no chemo. From a CrossFit perspective, I look at this as 5 days on 23 days rest. I did not know what I know now, that my chemo dose would increase each cycle until I hit the prescribed dose.
So, with this in mind Todd came up with her own benchmark WOD relating to the 5 on and 23 off of 5 movements, 23 reps each.

"Lauriel" For Time: (20 minute cap)

The actual theme of Octoberfest came from Chris McC (former trainer) as well as the unique muscled-arm handled beer mug trophy for 1st place, beer glass for 2nd and shot glass for 3rd!
OO3 is on track to be even bigger than the year before, having sold out the 5 main categories of competitors in less than 2 hours.
The Beast of the East

The Beast of the East competition was born Monday, July 19th. Glenn and I we're flying home from the CrossFit Games. Sitting there an idea popped in my head, why not create a large scale, world class competition on the east coast? The moment the thought left my lips we knew that we were onto something special and we tossed ideas back and forth the entire ride home. What kind of events? Where would we hold it? What time of year? As our excitement grew, the rough outlines became clearer. As did the notion that we are committed to this. We knew early on that we wanted to give this competition the feeling that the early CrossFit Games had - kind of a Woodstock of fitness. We knew we wanted to do it outside of the timeframe that CrossFitters needed to prepare for the CrossFit Games. We envisioned it like the relationship the Arnold bodybuilding show has to the Olympia, not as big but an event worthy of world class athletes just the same. Not a direct competitor to the the CrossFit Games but just one more competition stop on a circuit. A throwdown on steroids if you will. To accomplish all this we settled on renting out the Durham Fairgrounds in Durham, Connecticut.

We selected October for a number of reasons that included letting athletes recover from the Games. Also, we wanted to give it a distinct New England flavor. A competition in the Fall, in New England would be awesome for athletes and spectators alike. We also knew that we wanted to include exercise or movements that have not shown up in the CF Games, like Strongman movements. Atlas stones and farmers carryies are only some of the things that come to mind from this discipline.

So, flash forward three weeks later and we have enlisted the help of Jason Ackerman from Albany CrosssFit to help us organize and MC the event. We went internally to have one of our own athletes (Greg Glidden) create the website to help manage the event. We have sought like-minded sponsors to help us with the costs of such a large event and we are pleased to announce these sponors that are on board already. Life as RX, SICFIT, Concept 2, S&S Worldwide, At Large Nutrition, BSc, and Fresh Cut Produce.

So what will be familiar to you in this competition? Grueling workouts, Olympic lifting, Power lifting, endurance events, metabolic conditioning events, multiple wods on multiple days, a rural setting, hundreds if not thousands of screaming CrossFit fans. Some familiar faces from other competitions. A large cash prize for all top three places male and female.

What will be different? The addition of Strongman movements will definitely spice things up. A pure Olympic event and pure power event with no other exercises to effect the lifts. The Fall season setting that should be very helpful to our athletes. We also have a few other things in store but don't want to give to much away.

The Nasty Northeast Throw down is a competition designed to support the integrity of what CrossFit really is: a no-frills community of athletes based on strength, speed, agility, and endurance. Challenge is what drives us to compete every day against ourselves, the clock, and any worthy adversary. Why not represent your skills with other like-minded athletes over a succession of 8 weeks? What we are creating here is simple: show up and workout something you're already doing, taken to the next level. All we ask is that you get down, get nasty, and get CrossFit.

The Nasty Northeast Throw down will take place every other week over 8 weeks (4 competitions total). Each week is not mandatory, however, teams will lose points based on missed weeks. WODs are based on a point system and are announced on-location. Competitions will take place across four different locations, each location TBA one week before. Teams will consist of 4 people and there is no limit of teams from each box. The cost per team is $200.
