Aja Barto has been an avid athlete his entire life. After graduating from Stratford High School in 2005, he began his path towards professional baseball playing outfield for the Tulane University Green Wave. He played there 3 years, along with two seasons in the Cape Cod Summer League with the Falmouth Commodores, earning a spot on the Cape All Star team in 2007. After his junior year at Tulane, he signed with the Texas Rangers organization, playing in their minor league farm system for two years before retiring after the 2009 season.

From a young age, he was a gym rat spending countless hours in the gym trying to get bigger, faster and stronger to keep ahead of the competition. While with the Rangers, Aja was introduced to CrossFit. This was definitely a different way of training. Aja was amazed at the intensity and efficiency of CrossFit.

CrossFit also provides an outlet for his lifelong passion of competing. Aja recently competed in the CrossFit Games beginning with the South Central Texas Sectional in Austin TX. He placed 14th overall and advanced to the South Central Regional Qualifier where he placed 11th.

After running track, swimming, and playing volleyball through high
school, I knew athletics would take me to another level. I ran track
for Mesa State University in Colorado and spent every second of four
years focused on getting fast enough to make it to Nationals in the
400m Hurdles. Competed in Cross Country, ran the 800m, the 200m,
4x400m relay, triple jumped, always wanted that "Heptathlete feeling"
of a little bit of everything. Soon I was sold on day one of CrossFit,
registering for my Level 1, booking flights for Cali, and started the
hours of neverending youtube videos of every tutorial and extreme
video the sport had to offer. Learning the girls at the Games and
filling books with notes and spending entire weeks in the gym, I knew
I wanted nothing else but to compete with the best- and now I get to
look around in my heats at local competitions, or athlete tents at the
Games, and see those faces, and know that I MADE IT.

I'm supposed to write about my "life outside of CrossFit." Well I'd
love to sit in a room full of other aspiring CF Games competitors and
have us all stare at eachother and go.. 'Oh, Paleo...? Like what we
eat?...um... hangin with training partners.... well, wait, you mean
what do we do on our recovery days?' Ha. Well when I'm taking an
off-day I work on skill, or demonstrate movements all day while
coaching. I personal train and mold my clients like clay into little
Fran-fearing Woders. Preaching range of motion, quality of movement,
functional exercises and watching this sport be more than just a
fitness craze, but instead, a way of life, is more than just teaching
classes. It's a game of preparation and self discipline. It's looking
around at your friends before you grab the remote to yell 3..2..1..GO,
being anxious, nervous, and having a genuine excitement for the
undetermined, that will NEVER get old. Qualifying for the Games on the
Brick Team was one of the best experiences in my life. The training
together, the teamwork, the pressure and the focus we all shared is
what I moved here for!

I spend all my days between three gyms where there's never a dull
moment. Coaching at an all girls gym called Pink Iron, and Brick
CrossFit where I'm the only non-actor or model, and Mean Streets
downtown where that awesome jerk Ronnie Teasdale coaches me :) .
Staying in touch with family and three younger brother and sisters,
and remembering I couldn't have done anything without God's help keeps
me grounded.

Let the Good times ROLL!

Growing up I played football, hockey and lacrosse. I went to prep-school during my high school years and there we were required to play three seasons of sports. There I played varsity football, hockey and I decided to run track to get faster. This is when I learned that I needed to get stronger and faster because I was only ™5" and I was not getting any taller so I decided to learn a thing or two about weightlifting. I would lift every day and have practice or a game every day, I became a gym rat. I went to college at SUNY Cortland and was going to play hockey, but decided to pursue my studies instead. Then I became your quintessential meathead, but I always trained with intensity and as if it were my last work out. This helped my transition into CF, but I had a lot of learning to do.

I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in December of 2007 after having finished playing on a full volleyball scholarship. While at Pitt, I received many awards, some of which include All Big East Conference honors, as well as honorable mention of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. I also earned several "Big East Conference" player of the week honors. I was ranked 1st in the Big East for Assists and 47th nationally. I also won the Pitt Volleyball Strength and Conditioning Award, along with the Pitt Volleyball Leadership Award.

My senior year - I won the Senior of Distinction Award amongst five other graduating senior student-athletes.

I moved to El Paso, Texas to coach as an Assistant with the UTEP Volleyball Team in July of 2008. During my time in El Paso, Texas, I got involved with Paul Smith's Get Lifted Gym. The first time I did CrossFit, I thought to myself "How is it that I've been an athlete my whole life, but I've never experienced training this intense?" I then started doing CrossFit and got hooked. In March of 2010, I completed my Level 1 Crossfit Certification Course and started training at Get Lifted.

I competed with the Get Lifted Affiliate Team @ the South-Central Regionals in Dallas, Texas, and we made it to the 2010 Crossfit Games. Ever since then, I have been heavily involved in the CrossFit sport.

Currently, I'm training for the 2011 Indoor Track Season and beyond to 2012 Olympics. My short term goal is to be the first CF athlete to run sub 4 in the mile. I've run 4:00.2 twice.

Pisses me off which is why I'm still here. Injuries had always been my bane which is how I found CrossFit in the first place. I was literally injured my entire post collegiate career '04-'08. I placed 13th in the 1500m at the 2004 Olympic trials as a senior at Georgia Tech after which I moved to Palo Alto to run for the Nike Farm Team. I've been a CF'er for the past 3+ years which I found b/c I needed another method to stay in elite shape without being able to run!

CrossFit was the perfect fit. I started in Atlanta at CrossFit Smyrna and eventually became a trainer for Dan MacDougald at CF Atlanta. My girlfriend and I had our daughter in August of '08 and then picked up and moved out to San Francisco in the spring of '09. I then worked with Kelly Starrett and founded the San Francisco endurance team while also becoming a CrossFit Endurance coach for Brian MacKenzie. I went out on my own to start CrossFit San Mateo in February 2010. I took 2009 season off and began competing again in the 2010 track season.
I grew up in a military family with roots in Iowa and Hawaii. My family settled in Schertz, TX where I graduated high school from Samuel Clemens in 1999. I played soccer and tennis and I ran for the Cross Country team and the 800m in track. I attended the US Air Force Academy (USAFA) from 1999-2000. I played NCAA soccer in my first year of attendance at USAFA which is where my strength and conditioning foundation began. I left USAFA in DEC 2000 and continued my education at The University of Texas at Austin, but ultimately earned a B.S. in Chemistry from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in 2004. After graduating I worked as a Production and R&D Chemist for PhotoProtective Technologies, I enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard in early 2005.

In the Spring of 2003, while at UTSA, I tore my left knee ACL and had a 2 year road to recovery. During this time I gained weight reaching 198 lbs at only 5’3” with little fitness abilities. I was committed to a pursuit of becoming physically fit once again when I joined the Army in 2005. After modest gains in fitness thru March 2006 I discovered CrossFit. CrossFit took me to the next level and beyond. I later completed US Army Ranger School and multiple other US Army courses considered to be physically demanding. Upon my return from a deployment to Iraq in 2007-2008, I was called by the Texas Army National Guard Headquarters to help set up a military affiliate at Camp Mabry to train and program for 30-40 Soldiers daily along with assist in the logistical procurement of CrossFit equipment. It is a robust program that is now being used as a model to start up additional satellite military affiliates across the state. It has truly been an honor to be a part of providing the best fitness service, CrossFit, to fellow Soldiers and State employees to better serve our State and Country. CrossFit is my means, to better serve my passion as a Soldier in the Texas Army National Guard.

Erwan Le Corre

Erwan was born September 10th, 1971 in France. At home the TV set had a black and white screen with no remote control and no video games, home computers and internet didn’t exist. Most leisure time was spent outdoors exploring the surrounding woods. Not only he was let free to go move outside as much as he wanted, he was encouraged to do so.

At a very young age, Erwan’s father would often take him outdoors to run and crawl, climb and jump. That’s when his passion for natural movement started. Apart from judo, he did not have any other formal physical education other than freely exploring his environment until he turned 15.

At age 15, Erwan is introduced to karate which very soon becomes a great passion and teaches him the virtues of discipline, method and commitment. He soon competes and succeeds at national level in France and gets his black belt at age 18, only to realize that it was a too limited approach that did not fulfill his great thirst for body/mind self-knowledge and self-growth.

At age 19, Erwan is introduced to a philosophy of natural movement and lifestyle called “Combat Vital” while living in Paris. For 7 years he trains in natural or urban settings – day or night. Climbing bridges, balancing on heights, jumping from roof to roof, walking on all fours in the underground, swimming in cold waters, breath training and fighting techniques.

At age 27, Erwan decides to follow his own path. This period includes mainly sailing, Olympic weightlifting, rock climbing, long distance triathlon, trail running and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. While understanding the benefits of every field he explores, he also recognizes the issues sport specialists have to deal with. These experiences confirm his intuition that a broader approach is more beneficial to everyday life and is more fun as well as healthier.

At age 33, he discovers the history of Georges Hebert and Methode Naturelle® which fascinates him and in which he finds many similarities with his own approach and past experience. From then, Erwan researches everything about Hebert and Methode Naturelle®, unearthing photos and newspaper archives and extensively studying the old, dusty French Methode Naturelle books. Erwan decides to fully dedicate his training to natural movement again, while starting to train others.

After studying every detail of its history and the reasons why the practice of Methode Naturelle® declined to almost total extinction and failed to propagate itself into the modern era, Erwan understands that the best way to revive the practice is to improve and update the coaching system as well as providing an overall approach that better fits the people of today’s world with today’s concerns and expectations.

In 2008, while living, training and coaching in Brazil, he works on improving and renovating the old training method, leading to the creation of the Natural Movement Coaching System®. At the same time, he defines his approach called “True Nature”, which states that it is our universal birthright to be strong, healthy, happy and free. MovNat is born.

In 2009, Erwan is featured in Men’s Health USA in an inspiring article about him and MovNat written by Christopher McDougall in which the journalist describes his transformative first-hand training experience with Erwan in Brazil.

He now lives in the USA.

Present and future

Erwan is working on several projects, including instructional DVDs, a book, the opening an indoors-outdoors facility to train people from around the world as well as certifying the future MovNat coaches, starting 2011. A new movement of natural movement is born!

From CrossFitGames.com
I came into CrossFit as a middle to long distance triathlete; I was pretty competitive at the Olympic, half-Ironman, and Ironman distances. By the time I had found CrossFit, in 2007, I was getting sick of how high maintenance triathlons were getting for me: the wetsuit, goggles, cap, cycling shoes, race wheels, awkward cycling shorts, finding daycare for my kids while I trained for hours at a clip. I just never really looked forward to the training...or, the races for that matter. But, it was one of those situations where I had FINALLY found something I was good at, so I'd rather just suck it up and "be successful" than give up and go back to being average at everything else.

Either CrossFit came along at just the right time, or it was CrossFit that finally made me realize that I wasn't that into triathlons. The following summer, I competed in my first competition at CrossFit Albany 2008 NorthEast Challenge with Tanya Wagner, Christy Phillips, and Lauren Plumey (all '09 Games competitors!). Later on that year, my now husband, Ben, and I started CrossFit New England (literally, one of the best jobs in the galaxy). Went on to compete in a few more competitions, and in 2009 got lucky enough to qualify for the CrossFit Games in Aromas. I lost the tie for 16th place, ending up with 17th (just missing the opportunity to advance to the second day, which admittedly still haunts me every waking day of my life). Anyways, I decided I needed to do my Sectionals this year to get ready for Regionals, knowing that the competition would be a lot tighter. I guess the rest is to be determined.

One of my responsibilities at CrossFit New England is coordinating the CrossFit Kids program. I'll fully admit that "most" days I enjoy it even more than coaching adults. Those kids, including my own kids Maya (10) and Jonah (6), just never cease to amaze me with how good they are already at these movements. I just wish that I had started at their ages!

In addition to coaching at our affiliate, I've also spent the last year working on the HQ Level 1 Coaching Staff (the other greatest job on planet Earth). Getting to meet, coach and train with some of the other greatest athletes and coaches in world has been invaluable.

Literally, I can't imagine where I'd be without CrossFit. It's one of the greatest things that's ever happened to me.

After graduating from Santa Clara University I made the decision to do what I love and open a gym, I have never been more happy since. I am a Level 2 Crossfit Certified instructor in addition to Crossfit Running, Crossfit Kid's, and Crossfit Powerlifting Certified. On the weekend's I travel around the World as a Crossfit HQ coach to help train the trainers at Crossfit Certifications. In 2008 I won the Crossfit Games, I finished 5th in 2009 being honored with the spirit of the games award. Prior to opening Crossfit Santa Clara I was a trainer at Crossfit Unlimited in Milpitas. I was first introduced to Crossfit in 2006 by Austin (Crossfit Unlimited), it took me about 6 months to finally switch completely over to the good side. I had become so used to my previous muscle head workouts that it was extremely difficult for me to let go of my bicep curl and tricep extensions. Thankfully I finally committed to Crossfit and am now in the best shape of my life, period. Crossfit is by far the most effective workout I have ever done and I preach it to everyone as if I was part of a cult. I am so sick of watching people enroll in gyms and not get any results, with Crossfit if you put in the work you are guaranteed to get results. I am extremely enthusiastic about where Crossfit is going in the future and I look forward to being a part of it.
